AMERICAN ALLWASTE
Culture Book
Culture Book
Hello. Darrell Rogers here.
In 2018, American AllWaste was born out of an idea to take family-owned companies with highly experienced liquid-waste veterans and give them something they didn't have before. Synergy.
Company Culture is described as the ethos of an organization. In layman's terms it's the way people feel about the work they do, the values they believe in, where they see the company going and what they’re doing to get it there. When you work somewhere where the culture is a good fit, you tend to develop better relationships with coworkers, enjoy your work environment and be more productive. On the other hand, if you work somewhere that isn't a good fit you are likely to take far less pleasure in your job.
We strive for the American AllWaste culture to be the engine that powers this company. After all, culture determines what organizations are made of, and we think we're made of something pretty great.
If you haven't already joined our family, I hope you'll consider it. If you're already aboard, welcome. We're glad you're here.
People and Technology that Deliver Elite Non-Hazardous Liquid Waste Hauling and Processing Solutions.
The company provides drivers with bluetooth headsets for essential work calls only. Personal calls are prohibited while driving, but you may return those calls when you are safely pulled over. Sorry, safety trumps your social life. Oh, and when you are in a truck your cellphone lives in a cellphone locker. If it decides to visit you while driving, we've got problems. Lastly, all American AllWaste vehicles are installed with dual-facing cameras. Before you freak out it is for the safety of everyone and we don't record sound. These can provide concrete evidence to prove your innocence should an accident or driving incident occur for which you are not responsible. Tampering with or covering up this device is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary actions... Sorry, it's just the rules.
Driving Growth. Protecting the Environment through Innovation. Exceeding Expectations.

We're in the business of creating leaders and we're here to set you up for success. So, listen carefully. The first thing you have going for you is you've chosen American AllWaste as your home, or are seriously considering it. This alerts me to the fact that you are indeed of sound mind and of higher intelligence. The second thing you have is well, me - A.k.a your guide on your journey to becoming more magnificent, and my below list. The following are some specific examples of ways to be awesome and to impress your colleagues and leaders. Naturally, this list cannot be all-inclusive, but hopefully it will give you a leg up:
(Truth: We try hard not to hire them. But, they temporarily sneak in sometimes.)
We're moving from an accountability culture to a learning culture. FYI, It's kind of the gold standard these days. Now before you guys start thinking this is a free-for-all on accountability, think again. We are still holding you accountable for your work and your team's work. What we mean by this is accountability cultures focus primarily on building backwards, while learning cultures focus on building forward. It's achieved by leaders who are responsible for our employees and serving them, and not just responsible for ruling them.
Learning cultures enable employees to acquire, assimilate and transfer new knowledge to create value. It's about replacing competition with cooperation and dialogue. Organizations that have this culture, value people and want them to learn and grow for their own good and the good of the company.
Annual reviews were once the popular and standardized process, but American AllWaste is committed to creating a culture of "people development". Before you get excited, we will still have annual reviews. They are necessary to provide transactional data needed in performance management. Annual reviews and our "people development" culture coexist. I know. Mind blown. Boom. The "people development" side is a culture of putting our employees in charge of their own growth. Where evaluations center on how to help our employees succeed, not sorting out who needs to be terminated. How do we do it? We recognize in real time. We provide performance metrics frequently with one-on-one informal discussions to celebrate accomplishments and provide continuous feedback.

PTO
Rookies get 80 hours/year accrued. After 3 years of service you accrue 120 hours/year and after 7 years you accrue 160 hours/year.
Hourly Employees: At the end of the year, 40 hours or less rolls over and any hours over 40 is paid out to you. You never lose PTO time, but we prefer you take it so you can recharge and see your loved ones.
*Salaried Employees: You can't cash out PTO, sorry. You accrue until you hit a cap and once that cap is hit you won't accrue any until you use some.

Our offices are super casual. Jeans & t-shirts are the most common. Sometimes people wear button downs or blouses if they're feeling fancy.
For our drivers and plant personnel, SAFETY comes before style (although we try our best to keep it real). Get used to the color safety yellow, hard hats and steel toe boots. The good news is you get to pick your pants... kind of... we prefer jeans.
